Fall Blooming Flowers and Plants

Even though the season says it Fall, California can’t seem to shake off the summer heat.  More than likely, you’ve noticed that nature is alive and well as our blooming landscapes have died off and the gardens have lost their color.

Even though the drought is still active, there are some hardy fall blooms you can plant in your garden and will last up to 3 years. You may have heard of perennials but do you know what they are?

Perennials are considered to be ornamental plants that are expected to live longer than 2 years. Perennials may go to seed every year and may even die back to the ground at times, but their roots are very much alive and the plants will continue growing when the conditions are right.

This does not mean they live forever. Some perennials are considered to be short-lived, lasting only 2-3 years and not all perennials are hardy in all areas.

The term perennial is most often used for plants with showy flowers, but plants like ornamental grasses,  tropical’s and other plants that have their own categories may also be perennial. The term herbaceous perennial further narrows the group to plants with soft, green stems that die back to the ground in colder climates.  Perennial trees and shrubs would be considered woody or non-herbaceous (non-woody) perennials.

A few popular Perennials are peonies, iris and cornflowers.
