Reduce your Overall Curb Trash

There are two appliance options for reducing household trash; installing a garbage disposal unit or a trash compactor. Though they are often referred to by similar names, they are two totally different appliances with their own distinct operational functions.

The Garbage Disposal was invented in 1927 and now more than 50% of US homes have a disposal unit in their kitchens.  Yet, many people either under utilized their disposal or continue to use the trash can method.  Garbage or food waste disposal units are large on convenience when it comes to cleaning off dinner plates, but their biggest benefit is truly the environment, since they can reduce considerably the amount of food waste that would otherwise be sent to the landfill. A garbage disposal also reduces your trash and the trips to the curb for pick up.  Not to mention the time, effort and annoyance of taking out lots of trash bags.  How much money in the long run will you save? This question is worth bringing out the trusty calculator.

The Trash Compactor or more commonly known as trash or garbage compactors, usually installed under the kitchen counter, close to the sink area.

Trash compactors have the most impact on reducing trash overall. Depending on their design, they can compact to a bag ratio of 4:1 or even up to 6:1. That means that with a larger unit, you can compact six bags worth of trash into one take-to-the-curb bag. However, the compacted bag will be much heavier than a normal garbage bag.

The compactor is most efficient when it comes to eliminating a larger amount of garbage bags.  The additional advantage of crushing cans, glass and other waste is a great perk.

Either appliance will help you to manage your waste, reduce landfill garbage overall and compliment your other green initiatives.
