How to Organize a Small Home

Small homes have great potential with proper planning. If you own a small home or plan to downsize here are a few helpful organization ideas so you can make the most of your cozy space.

Baskets, Plastic and Bags
Storage containers come in all shapes, sizes and textures.  You can get organized and decorate your home at the same time.  Large plastic containers are great for books or linens.  Baskets are nice for you home office and closet.  For even more space, the vacuum storage bags allow you to deflate the big items like quilts, pillows and large jackets; you can then store them under the bed.

Wall Space and Coat Hooks
Some homes have a guest closet for extra clothing or…guest but, chances are in your cozy home you have repurposed this precious space for other items.  But, the wall near the front door is available.  Coat hooks are perfect.  Be creative or visit a specialty store and you will find some interesting hooks.

Furniture for Storage
Furniture for your small home in today’s marketplace is simple to find.  A great idea for the bedroom includes beds with drawers below for storage or a bed that is high enough to fit under-bed storage containers. Nightstands with shelves and draws can hold books, clothes and other items. Foot stools with removable tops have a dual purpose of storage and seating.

Store Appliances Out Of The Way
It’s fun to purchase all the newest kitchen gadgets but, in small homes you should keep it to a limit. When is the last time you use the pink mixer or toaster oven? If it was more than a month move it to a high shelf or the back of a cabinet. This will free up your kitchen counter for more work space, and make the room look less cluttered.

Drawer Organizers
Small homes tend to have small kitchens and limited shelving. Keep your cool when cooking with drawer organizers.  They can help keep items in place, so you don’t need to rummage through everything. You can have them customized or use plastic bins that fit inside your drawers.

Going Up?
In a small home, think about going vertical and use space above the surface of your furniture. How about wall shelves over the desk for storing books?  What about a bulletin board in the kitchen for notes, tickets, and shopping lists? These are just a couple of home organization ideas to use your wall space.

Organize the Toys
Arrange some low shelves so the children can reach, with bins or baskets to hold all of their toys. When it’s time to clean up the process is easy and convenient.  Another idea is each basket or bin has a color to represent a type of toy…blue for trucks and yellow for books.

Don’t Forget the Garage
Small home garages typically become a dumping ground of odds and ends and everything that doesn’t fit anywhere else. Keep this all organized with shelving and plastic storage bins, clearly labeled and stacked along the walls.  Labeling is important and easy.  Use clear storage containers with a snug top.  Label each container with a plastic sticky back business card holder and card stock to fit.  Mark each bin clearly with a large marker.
