Important Tips for Stress Free Moving

Moving can be stressful but, there are simple ways to make the process more organized.  Here are a few basic items:

Document all your cords:  Take photos and mark each cord with the equipment it belongs with.  Make notes on how your media equipment is up (television, sound equipment, modems and computer).

Update your address:  Either visit your local post office or their website at USPS.com and submit your address change.

Plan for your pet: Moving can be stressful for pets too.  Consider leaving pets with a familiar friend or a boarder until the move is complete. Also contact your local human society for possible new pet licenses.

Schedule touch-up paint jobs and clean-up: If you’re renting, you may be responsible for paint touch-ups and clean-up before moving out. If so, schedule a painter and maid service before you move out.  Once you have a moving date set, get a couple of bids from both services.  Schedule the painter first then the maid after the paint dries before you turn in your keys.

Need some help?  Not using a mover?  Make sure you repay friends and family for their help in some way.  In the morning provide hot and cold drinks along with muffins and for lunch maybe pizza and cold drinks.  Keep your help happy because they are working hard.

“First Night” box:  You’ve moved all day and now you are really tired.  Designate one box or bag with all your necessary essentials for the first night.  Don’t’ forget to include medications, change of clothes, toiletries, pet food, toilet paper, cell phone chargers, flash light, a light blub and something to eat and drink too.  This is the first box you complete and the first box you put in the vehicle you are driving to your new home.

Suite cases and recycled bags are your friends: Use large suitcases and recycled carry bags to transport clothes, towels, jewelry and light-weight items.

Important documents and photos stay with you!  Either purchases a secure durable file folder or binder for birth certificates, family photos, insurance policies and other important documents.  Do not toss these easy-to-loose documents into a random box!  This folder goes in the car with you and the “First Night” box.

Stage your layout: Visit your new home prior to the move in.  Put large signs on all the rooms for the movers.  If you have more than one bedroom or bathroom, number that room (bathroom 1 or bedroom 4). Put labels on the boxes for the movers marked so they don’t put them in the wrong room.

Save your receipts: In many cases moving expenses are tax-deductible.  Carry an envelope with you for all of your cost to pass on to your accountant.
